Akron Residents Residing in Wards 1, 3 & 5

Akron, Ohio, July 17, 2024 — Akron City Council is reopening the application process for Doorbell Camera Safety Program to distribute a limited number of unclaimed cameras to eligible Akron residents living in Wards 1, 3 and 5.  Starting Wednesday, July 24th at 8:00 a.m., and concluding on Thursday, July 25th at 4 p.m. residents residing in Wards 1, 3 & 5 who have not previously received a doorbell camera can apply for their free camera via the Online application.  Residents can confirm that they reside in one of these wards at akroncitycouncil.org/find-my-wardApplications submitted from residents living outside of Wards 1, 3, & 5 will not receive consideration.

Cameras will be distributed during scheduled hours at the offices of Akron City Council. Doorbell cameras are a part of the City’s concerted effort to combat neighborhood crime and package theft.

During Phase 2 of the program, 7,536 applications were received and processed for 3,000 cameras (300 per Ward).  All applicants were notified by email of their application status.  To date 74% of the 3,000 cameras awarded have been distributed.  Residents continue to respond favorably to being awarded a camera through this public safety initiative.

The Ring Camera and accompanying app functions as a neighborhood watch and provides residents with the ability to capture video and/or photos of criminal activity. A bonus for users is the camera’s intercom (two-way mic/speaker functionality), in addition to the ability to view entry way activity remotely from the convenience of the Ring App.

This program is available to Akron residents, both homeowners and renters. Home ownership will be verified through Summit County Property Records.   Renters must submit an Attestation form signed by their landlord with their online application.  The attestation form can be downloaded here.  Distribution is limited to one camera per applicant/household. Cameras will be distributed until supplies are exhausted. Individuals who previously received a doorbell camera are not eligible to participate in this phase of the Doorbell Camera Safety Project.

Beginning July 24th at 8:00 a.m., residents can apply for their free camera via the Online application.  Applicants who have been approved to receive a camera will be notified via email.

The Doorbell Camera Safety Project is funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
